Overview of the Role
Are you currently studying in your second or penultimate year at the University of Leeds? Would you like to gain valuable experience working in a department that aims to raise the aspirations and attainment of learners in schools and colleges across the country? This internship offers the opportunity to spend your placement year working full-time with Educational Engagement colleagues.
Educational Engagement is focused on the recruitment and success of students, regardless of background. We do this by delivering specific areas of work but also by working closely with colleagues across the faculties, professional services and the wider Directorate of Educational Engagement and Student Success and colleagues.
Educational Engagement works with secondary schools and further education colleges to support learners at every stage of their educational journey. We offer a comprehensive and sustained programme of outreach initiatives, projects and events aimed at a range of audiences including prospective students, parents and carers, teachers and other key influencers involved in supporting learners with higher education progression.
The Student Success Centre works to improve the outcomes and student experience of all students regardless of background. We work alongside faculty and other professional services colleagues to deliver a wide range of projects and activities that aim to support student who are from under-represented groups as well as supporting all students in engaging as fully in their university studies as possible.
Working across Educational Engagement, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of engaging and interactive outreach activities, contributing to projects across the service and supporting the evaluation of this work.
Linking with staff across the University, you will have opportunities to represent the University of Leeds at our on- and off-campus events, working with schools and colleges to ensure that learners, teachers, careers advisers and parents understand the benefits of studying at the University of Leeds, the courses we offer and the progression routes available.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- As an Educational Engagement Intern your main duties will include:
- Assisting with the administration, organisation and operational delivery of sustained outreach programmes for Widening Participation students, both on and off campus;
- Supporting events on campus for schools, colleges and prospective students, delivering or facilitating presentations and workshops on a variety of topics to promote our programmes and the university;
- Contributing to projects across the office to support teams to meet their objectives as part of the Access and Student Success Strategy;
- Supporting teams across Educational Engagement in evaluating the impact and success of our work, through the collection and recording of evaluation data;
- Assisting with the production of resources for access and student success projects;
- Assisting teams with communication and promotion of activities, including social media
- Providing day-to-day administrative support to teams across Educational Engagement.
These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- A University of Leeds student in your second or penultimate year of study intending to take this role for a placement year as part of your degree;
- Evidence and experience of working within a team;
- Excellent time-management skills with the ability to prioritise your own work;
- Able to use your own initiative to solve problems and work independently;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people of different backgrounds, ages and levels of seniority;
- An understanding of the barriers in progressing to higher education for under-represented students.
