Educational Engagement is focused on the recruitment and success of students, regardless of background. We do this by delivering specific areas of work but also by working closely with colleagues across the faculties, professional services and the wider Directorate of Educational Engagement and Student Success and colleagues.

Educational Engagement works with secondary schools and further education colleges to support learners at every stage of their educational journey. We offer a comprehensive and sustained programme of outreach initiatives, projects and events aimed at a range of audiences including prospective students, parents and carers, teachers and other key influencers involved in supporting learners with higher education progression.

The Student Success Centre works to improve the outcomes and student experience of all students regardless of background. We work alongside faculty and other professional services colleagues to deliver a wide range of projects and activities that aim to support student who are from under-represented groups as well as supporting all students in engaging as fully in their university studies as possible.

Working across Educational Engagement, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of engaging and interactive outreach activities, contributing to projects across the service and supporting the evaluation of this work.

Linking with staff across the University, you will have opportunities to represent the University of Leeds at our on- and off-campus events, working with schools and colleges to ensure that learners, teachers, careers advisers and parents understand the benefits of studying at the University of Leeds, the courses we offer and the progression routes available.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • As an Educational Engagement Intern your main duties will include:
  • Assisting with the administration, organisation and operational delivery of sustained outreach programmes for Widening Participation students, both on and off campus;
  • Supporting events on campus for schools, colleges and prospective students, delivering or facilitating presentations and workshops on a variety of topics to promote our programmes and the university;
  • Contributing to projects across the office to support teams to meet their objectives as part of the Access and Student Success Strategy;
  • Supporting teams across Educational Engagement in evaluating the impact and success of our work, through the collection and recording of evaluation data;
  • Assisting with the production of resources for access and student success projects;
  • Assisting teams with communication and promotion of activities, including social media
  • Providing day-to-day administrative support to teams across Educational Engagement.

We have an exciting opportunity at RSK for you to join Leap Environmental, a dynamic and vibrant Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Consultancy in the South East. Working alongside and being supported by an experienced team based in Goudhurst, you will be assisting the team in undertaking a wide variety of geo-environmental and geotechnical investigations, including site work, desk studies, interpretative report and design.

LEAP has already achieved a lot in a short time growing into one of the principal site investigation and consultancy firms currently operating in the south east, and is now embarking on the next exciting phase of the business, becoming part of the RSK Group and taking advantage of the wider market and technical opportunities this brings.  LEAP is actively involved in a number of groundbreaking initiatives involving sustainability and contaminated land and its employees are active committee or working party group members of SoBRA, Geological Society and AGS.

Main Duties and Tasks

Placement students will report directly to a Project or Senior Engineer or on occasion directly to the Regional Manager. Whilst the majority of the work will be directed from the office at which you are located, there is a good deal of inter region work and you may be required to work from one of the other regional offices for a single day or an extended period.

The placement student will be required to carry out all or some of the following tasks:

  • Collect geological, geochemical and geotechnical data.
  • Prepare equipment and information in preparation for site work.
  • Visit sites – both greenfield/brownfield that may or may not be due for development/redevelopment and also active construction sites and compile site visit notes for inclusion in Phase 1 reports.
  • Undertake field work/site investigations, under the direction of a Project or Senior Engineer/Geologist.
  • Assist Project or Senior Engineer in trial pitting.
  • Hand excavation for foundation inspection pits and/or hand augering shallow soil samples.
  • Log soils and rocks to BS5930.
  • Onsite ground water and/or gas/vapour sampling using specialist monitoring equipment.
  • Pack samples for geotechnical and environmental laboratory analysis.
  • Use in-house and commercial computer spread sheets and applications to present, collate and/or analyse data.

The above list is not exhaustive and the placement student may be required to assist in or be responsible for the delivery of any product/service provided by the Company.

All staff are provided with the necessary training and support to carry out their duties.  You will have the opportunity to participate in the graduate training provision, as well as wider ranging inhouse training and webinars.

  • Studying towards a relevant qualification, e.g. BSc in Geology, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering
